So you’ve booked your engagement session – SO exciting!! This is now where most people go “BUT WHAT DO I WEAR!?” Cue the scene from the Grinch where he tries on everything in his closet.
Okay in all seriousness, I know it can be a daunting task to choose what to wear for your photos. You’re both commemorating an incredibly exciting season of life AND sharing these photos in any number of ways. You want to dress up because it’s special but you also want to feel like yourself. Do you buy something new? Do you wear white? Where do you even buy white engagement dresses!?
Have no fear, I gotchu boo π
At the end of the day, I want you to feel like yourself when you look back at these photos, and part of that is wearing what most feels like you! Apply all of this to what you already know looks good on you and makes you feel confident and comfortable!
Here are my creative pointers…
What do you already have?
Take a look at whatever is already in your closet, and go from there! Don’t immediately jump to: “Let’s buy something new that I’d never wear in real life!” Totally cool if you want something new and special for your shoot, but just make sure it reflects who you’ve been all along!
Dress for Movement
Keep in mind that your engagement session may involve some movement and interaction, so choose outfits that allow you to move freely and comfortably. Make sure you can move in your outfit very easily, and it’s a huge added bonus if the piece itself moves as well!
TRY: Flowy, airy, fun, textured, soft, etc… AVOID: Stiff, crisp, business, startchy, etc…
Coordinate, But Don’t Match
When choosing outfits for your engagement session, aim for coordinated looks rather than perfectly matching ensembles. Coordinate colours, patterns, and styles that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. This will add visual interest to your photos while still allowing each of your personalities to shine through.
Consider Your Location
Think about the location and setting of your engagement session when selecting your outfits. If you’re shooting in a natural outdoor setting, opt for outfits that blend seamlessly with the surroundings. For urban or cityscape backdrops, consider more contemporary and stylish attire.
Dress for the Season
Light, airy fabrics and pastel hues work well for spring and summer sessions, while rich colours and cozy textures are perfect for fall and winter shoots. Dressing appropriately for the weather will ensure you feel comfortable and confident throughout your session!
Show Off Your Personal Style
Your engagement session is all about showcasing your unique personalities, so don’t be afraid to let your personal style shine through in your outfit choices. Whether you prefer classic elegance, bohemian chic, or trendy and modern looks, choose outfits that make you feel like your best selves.
Avoid Busy Patterns and Logos
While a pop of pattern or a subtle print can add visual interest to your outfits, avoid wearing clothing with busy patterns or large logos that may distract from your faces in the photographs. Opt for timeless, understated pieces that won’t overshadow the main focus of the images β your love for each other.
Don’t Forget the Details
Pay attention to the little details that can elevate your look and add personality to your outfits. Consider accessorizing with statement jewelry, stylish hats, or colorful scarves to add visual interest and flair to your ensemble. You can also bring along props like champagne + flutes, your pup, food, etc.
Test-Drive Your Outfits
Before the big day, do a test run of your chosen outfits to make sure they fit well and photograph beautifully. Take some selfies or mirror shots to see how the colours and styles look together and make any necessary adjustments before the session.
A note on colours:
I always recommend neutrals and earthy-toned colours that visually fit into the natural/earthy surroundings we are shooting in! Try to avoid overly bright colours and tones that just don’t look like they fit in our natural setting.
When it comes to colour, you want to stand out from your surroundings, but still look like you belong there.
That said, one or two pops of colour pair nicely with neutrals everywhere else. For example, if you do have a pop of colour in the outfits, itβs nice to not overcrowd that colour (or 2) with other ones. on the right are some recommended neutrals and colours!
By following these tips and advice, you’ll be well-prepared to choose the perfect outfits for your engagement session and create stunning photographs that capture the love and happiness you share as a couple. So go ahead, have fun with your outfits, and get ready to make some beautiful memories together!
